For Scherers, Brazil tour a family affair

Steve and Allison Scherer

It won’t exactly be the iconic American family vacation, complete with minivan and packed lunches, but the Brazil trip will be a chance for two tour members to experience a foreign country together as father and daughter.  It’s been 25 years since Steve Scherer was a formal member of the WIU Wind Ensemble, but this spring he makes a comeback as one of the alumni joining the tour.  Now the band director at Geneseo High School, Scherer’s Brazil experience will be particularly special because his daughter, Allison,  a current WIU musical theater major, will also be playing with the ensemble.  (For an added “aww” element — Allison’s parents were both members of the WIU Marching Leathernecks in the early 1980s. Mom, Jane, was a member of the color guard while dad was in the drum line.)

Allison’s participation in the University Band and the Brazil tour is evidence of the opportunities the WIU School of Music gives students to continue playing or singing even if they’ve chosen a non-music major.  Allison’s semester includes a schedule packed with theater, signing, and flute playing.  For Steve, the Brazil trip is an example of the university’s efforts to maintain relationships with its graduates.  And the experience will give both Scherers a unique opportunity to grow as musicians while forging an even tighter bond as father and daughter.

In fact, the Scherers aren’t the only tour members for which the Brazil trip will be something of a family vacation.  Twins Amber and Yvonne Dean are part of the group, as well as sisters Andrea and Jessica Todd.
